I compliment you for trying! I hope this recent 'real world' example (also
available from the archive of the Mandrake newbie list) helps a little :)

It's not supported because Philips refuses to release the information necesary
to write a driver :((((

I think the 'standard' way is to make sure 'hardrake' and 'kudzu' are set to
run on boot, when booting after installing the card it should be automagically
set up. You can also run HardDrake later of course. AFAIK the use of sndconfig
is advised when HardDrake (from the Mandrake Control Centre) fails.

And 8 days later he decides to get another, _Linux supported_ card..... :

I know Gina from this list has gotten an Audigy to work (you can get her
email address from the archives, maybe she is no longer subscribed).

Don't expect out of the box support! But if there is a driver for Linux it
should work independent of the distribution. And there are drivers:
see http://opensource.creative.com/ , they have a mailing list, if you're
lucky they have a searchable archive :) ALSA also has support for the Audigy.

I don't think Creative ships Linux software at this moment :) About hardware:
don't expect everything to work, I suggest trying the Creative mailing list
and search the archive and/or ask questions there about supported features.
As Femme said: IEEE1394 is Firewire.

Creative has someone (Garin) working on their Open Source driver. AFAIK
a lot about the to be supported features depends on managment descisions
about what information about their hardware can be disclosed, either directly
or via the driver sourcecode. And managment will consider the possibility
that people choose different sound hardware because of better Linux support,
so letting your voice heard might help getting (even) more Creative
cooperation with the Open Source community :)

Uhm, stay nice, but let Philips know you're dissapointed....

_At least_ basic recording and playback should work. Btw, ALSA supports
various (semi)professional cards that at the moment are better supported
under Linux then the Audigy. I don't think there is any reason to choose
the Audigy for technical or price/performance reasons.
