Does the lockup still happen if you load the ALSA modules once X is
running, rather than beforehand?

As a further useful idea or two, do you have the "Magic SysRq Key"
configured into your kernel?  It can sometimes save you some serious
fscking in situations like yours (see the kernel docs on it - but
basically it lets you do things like sync the disks and unmount
everything even during many lockup situations).  Also, is there any
chance you could run those kernel dumps through ksymoops?  (Not sure of
where you get it now - I think there's a note in linux/scripts/ksymoops)
