Thanks to all who have replied to my questions. It appears that since I am using the .5xx version of alsa I am going to have to upgrade to the .9xx version.
Is there an easy way to do this with Mandrake 8.2 because when I try and un-install the .5xx version via the Software Mangaer, it want's to remove half the applications on my system, I suppose because they use sound. Is there an rpm somewhere?
