I do use the KDE desktop. On your advice I tried stopping aRts by selecting 
Preferences>Sound>Sound Server from the K menu and unchecking the Start aRts 
soundserver on KDE startup option and clicking on apply. I then logged out 
and logged back in but aplay still failed to produce sound. Was this all 
that I needed to do to stop aRts?
