no, /proc/asound/sndstat shows the status of OSS emulation.
the message means only that snd-pcm-oss module is still not loaded.
ALSA native apps should work without the module.

regarding to your problem:
one possibility is EAPD (external amplifier power down) switch.
please turn on/off whether it brings any difference.

also, if you're using a notebook, it may have a different connection
to the amp than defined in the driver.  there is a module option
"snd_amp_gpio", which specifies the GPIO pin number.
try to give this option different values from 0 to 15, and check
whether any sounds come out.
