Well, you could try aRtsd, its the KDE equivalent of esd. Dunno really which 
one is better, but it essentially does the same thing, and there is a wrapper 
for it that allows you to insure that any program using sound will output via 
aRts. You just run "artsdsp <yourprogram>" (tack artsdsp onto the start of 
the command line). Maybe its no better than esd, but its worth a try.
