I think the issue is simple. The sound-device can only be opened once. So either xmms 
or alsaplayer gets it. The Solution you're talking about is using a sound deamon (like 
esd, or arts) that can handle multiple clients. The only problem might be that the 
alsaplayer is using nothing but the native alsa-driver, so he's always blocking the 
sound port, as he can't be run using a sound daemon for output.
