Could you please post the listing from pmidi?  I suspect that none of
those ports is actually a MIDI synth - they're likely all external MIDI
channels.  If there's no snd-<card>-synth module then your card probably
doesn't have an on-board synth - in which case you need to use a
software synth like timidity.  HTH.
