Thanks a lot, Laurie, will try the patch this evening (I'd love to compile immediately but have work to do). The delta 44 actually has no S/PDIF features, as far as I can tell. (http://www.midiman.com/products/m-audio/delta44.php). I will compile the latest alsa packages unless you tell me otherwise.
