Mark,
   So, in esence, what you're telling me, is that when I
compile and install ALSA 0.9.0rc2 it doesn´t overwrite my
ALSA 0.5.12a modules present in
/lib/modules/2.4.18-prempt/misc ?

So from what you wrote my options are:

1.- Remake all kernel modules. Which I believe only takes
a:

# rm -rf /lib/modules/2.4.18-prempt
# cd /usr/src/linux
# make modules && make modules_install

Am I correct?

And then configuring and installing ALSA 0.9.0rc2

2.- Fresh Kernel compile: IF (and only if) I try a fresh
kernel compile (lots of recompiling! : nVidia, lm_sensors,
vmware, alsa, ...) I'll let you know how it went.

3.- As a previous reply stated - remake kernel and modules
(NO fresh kernel compile) after wiping off old modules
dir.

I thought it would work, because it did when I upgraded my
ALSA drivers to 0.5.12a.

Anyway, thanks for your reply. Oh! the preempt patch I'm
using is in:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/rml/preempt-kernel/v2.4/preempt-kernel-rml-2.4.18-5.patch

I applied it over pure vanilla Linux 2.4.18 works great!!

Good luck and thanks again.
