It's what I needed to do to get it to compile. A make install
plonked libALSA.so.0.0.0 in /usr/lib/xmms/Output/, I restarted xmms
and selected the alsa output module and viola. I'm not sure why
it's not a current Debian package.

Excuse my presumption.

I had no luck using any ALSA before 0.9rc2, all Debian packages
locked up my machine solid since the beginning of the year. FWIW.
