Usually, the procedure depends on your distribution. The directly editing of modules.conf is not necessary. I.e. SuSE > 7.0, type yast I.e. Debian > type modconf AFAIK, alsa 0.5.12 contains a tool / utilitiy called alsaconf, which will do is for you.
