I'm currently in the process of switching from SuSE (7.2) to Debian
(Woody). Using reasonably current ALSA CVS (maybe a week or so since I
last did an update).

Under SuSE, (with a self built 2.4.17 + pre-empt) everything worked
fine. Since switching I've been using 2.4.19 + low-latency + pre-empt
(built using the Debian kernel package tools) and while all the apps
I've tested so far seem to work fine; when no sound apps are running,
the PCM and Digital mixer monitors on envy24control show continuous
full-scale flickering signal. However there is no audible sound (until I
turn the volume way up when there is a slight whistle) when I switch my
audio system to play the card output. Both the flicker and the lack of
an apparent output from it are independent of the patchbay settings.
Running aplay (or playing from gwc) causes the phantom signals to vanish
and the expected sound to play, but shortly after exiting the app (a
second or three after) the phantom signales reappear.

The modules settings should be the same as I just copiend the sound
stuff from the old modules.conf to modutils/alsasound and ran
update-modules.

I'm currently using the xfce desktop (until I get KDE3 built -- left
games & graphics compiling when I came in to work this morning).

Is there anything glaringly obvious or any known problems here that
anyone else has seen? There are few more things I know I need to do to
check things out (like recording with & without input signals) but if
this is a familiar problem then I like to know.

More later ---
        TIA
                James
