Yes, you're right, I mis-read the '-p' argument of 'type'. But I will become 
an adequate shell script interpeter if it kills me ;-) Slowly but surely, the 
scripts in /etc/hotplug are starting to make sense to me.

It works. Gave me a bit of a scare when I rebooted (just to make sure) and my 
SB16 wasn't detected, but a cold reboot fixed that.

After my frazzled brain recovers from this experience, I will try to start 
working on a mini-howto, and put it out for people to error-check in the near 
future.
