you can change the enumerated mixer controls on the fly via the recent
alsamixer on cvs.
but... for the time being, the cvs alsa-lib is in chaos.
update only the appropriate files from cvs, i.e.
alsa-lib/include/mixer.h
alsa-lib/src/mixer/simple.c
alsa-utils/alsamixer/alsamixer.c
