Hi All,

Thanks Mathy for your help on this!

I did discover that my RH7.1 kernel had an incompatible sound driver
built in. I had never compiled a custom kernel for this machine, so I
went through that process and now the ALSA sound is working better, but
still not flawless.

The problem I'm seeing now I have read a bit about in the archives, but
haven't seen a solution.

When playing mpeg video on xmms, I get no sound, and the system comes to
a crawl with thousands of entries being placed in the syslog. This is
the entry I find in /var/log/messages:

Sep 20 17:32:48 JOHN-ANDREWS kernel: ALSA
../../alsa-kernel/pci/cs46xx/cs46xx_lib.c:767: BUG? (cpcm->pcm_channel)
(called from d087abc1)
Sep 20 17:32:48 JOHN-ANDREWS kernel: ALSA
../alsa-kernel/core/pcm_lib.c:176: BUG: stream = 0, pos = 0xfffffffa,
buffer size = 0x400, period size = 0x200

Following is the output of lsmod (which seems right):

[root@JOHN-ANDREWS avi-xmms-1.2.3]# /sbin/lsmod

Any thoughts on this logging would be very gratfully accepted...

I don't think it was volleyball 8-) They faced each other in two groups
across the plaza, maybe 6 or 8 players per team, no net or anything.
They threw a ball in a way similiar to cricket, but there was no wicket
or bat that I saw, just throwing the ball. They didn't seem to run in a
specific pattern, just threw the ball back and forth. There was quite a
crowd watching, some from a covered viewing stand.

Thanks Again for all of your help!
