Greetings.
I own a very old laptop with Es688 chip. (Pentium 75MHz, VESA Bus, was made in 1995).
Up to now I always used SuSE (till 7.2). It worked fine for me. Now I switched to
gentoo Linux and configured everything for month. The only thing that I still dont get
to work is the sound. I can use sb.o from the kernel (it's compatible) and the
snd-card-es1688 from alsa-0.5.12a always worked fine. But snd-es1688 from alsa-0.9.x
does not load.
I used the same modules.conf settings for both versions (except the difference
snd-card-es1688 / snd-es1688) when I installed/uninstalled the one or the other. (I've
taken it from SuSE.) I am pretty sure that I don't have a config-problem. I would just
like to know if somebody ever had this problem.. I understand that old hardware needs
old drivers. I experienced the same with the graphics-chip. It only works with
XFree-3.3.6 but no XFree-4.2 though it should be supported. You can believe me when I
say that it was a long way to find a mixed solution for that.
The problem is that I need to have the latest version of every software because there
are so many dependencies in gentoo Linux. I can live with sb.o but I would really
prefer alsa. So does anybody maybe know a way to get it to work, nevertheless ?
I would be grateful. I dont have very much hope but there still is this little doubt
though.
thnx
mox
