Hey-

I'm running an nForce board here and wonder if I can get multiple things
going out the soundcard at the same time.

I had been using OSS as it was in the kernel. I then fought hard to try
and get VMWare to use ESD or ARTSD to no avail. So then I read a few
usenet posts where people said they were able to play multiple things at
the same time (without the aid of a sound server) with cards such as the
Soundblaster PCI128 or SoundBlaster Live! series. My nForce is way
better than a PCI128 and marginally better than a SB Live!, IMHO :-)

So I've downloaded and compiled crap and now have ALSA working. I'm
using the 10/3 CVS build (I needed CVS for nForce support).

nForce audio utilizes a patched i810 driver. I was able to play
multiple things at the same time in Windows with the official nVidia
drivers (if that has any bearing as to if my card support muliple
i/o's?).

To be honest, I am not sure if the nForc is a muleichannel (? multiple
i/o) card or not, but I hope it is.

I currently have a very basic .asoundrc file...

        pcm.intel8x0 {
        type hw
        card 0
        }

        ctl.intel8x0 {
        type hw
        card 0
        }

...nothing else.

What exactly do I need to do to either/or:

1) Get the ability to play multiple things at once without the use of
ESD or Artsd (ie; play XMMS with the OSS or ALSA plugin while watching a
streaming RealPlayer video and hearing dings inside VMWare).
2) Find out if my sound chip, hardware-wise, even supports such things

I'm half tempted to pull out an old crappy PCI sound card, plug it in,
and run some cable from its out port to my LINE IN for the nForce then
tell vmware to use /dev/dsp1 ?

I'm really not so inept as it may seem here, honest! :-)

I just have very limited sound experience, especially in Linux. If I
can get a little bit of direction I'm sure I can figure most of it out
for myself.  :-)

Thanks!!

Rob
