Good suggestion! Sadly, I can't get pmidi to run on
my system.

 - If I compile, it complains that /sys/asoundlib.h
isn't there. From what I've seen, this header
has been deprecated, and isn't supposed to be
used anymore. I'm using pmidi 1.5.4, which is
supposed to work with alsa 0.9. I've played with
the headers a bit but I haven't been able to get
   it to compile.

 - If I install the RPM, it complains that
libasound.so.2 can't be found. Forcing the RPM
to install doesn't help: it complains at runtime.

Any ideas? I would dearly love to get external MIDI
working for this soundcard. Any and all suggestions
or diagnostics would be appreciated!
