I have 2 machines running RH 8.0 and alsa 0.9.0rc5-fr1. One is an athlonXp/1800
with all scsi drives, and the other is a 500 MHz P3 (Dell optiplex) with all
ide/eide.

The athlon box never exhibts this symptom; however, any time there is a major
disk access or a *large* X event on the screen, I get exactly this response on
the Dell. This never occurred in 7.3 for me, either, but only started with 8.0.
The sound cards have shared interrupts on each machine. I would check to see
if this is the situation in your case. If it *is* the case, try rearranging
things so that the sound card has a "less busy" interrupt. (I plan to do this
later myself but haven't had the time yet...).

Hope this helps,
