Ah, that is likely. Good guess. > I'm not aware of any development for a JAVA arts client though i'd love to > be corrected here ;) So my alsa-newb question is: does ALSA allow more than one program to open and write to sound devices? I assume ALSA would transparently software/hardware mix the sound? If yes, (I sure hope the answer is yes!) then the following is good news and the issue may be solved forever. If no, ... rats. Java still will not be able to play sounds under Linux. Requiring arts/esd die/suspend will not happen and people will just assume it doesn't work. Words can't express how disappointing that would be. I just received a response on java-sound: (question was would the new 1.4.2 ALSA support solve the artsd/esd issues) <quote> The artsd/esd issues are not necessarily resolved by that. But you can try it yourself: I submitted a beta version of the ALSA implementation to blackdown.org a month ago. I asked them to publish it on their web site, but they haven't done it yet. I think that politely asking the blackdown team for the pre-release (unfortunately I cannot distribute beta versions on my own) will do the trick. </quote> - -- Schedule your world with ScheduleWorld.com http://www.ScheduleWorld.com/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE92+DTBtoFHHwdJ/cRAsgOAJ9QGPaJQJaVVy+tQUNkvGKbumeO2wCgnPX1 7bH3OLKzGd5mfMDxEcjKr/w= =mwE2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------------------------------------------------------- This sf.net email is sponsored by: Battle your brains against the best in the Thawte Crypto Challenge.
