Hello,

I'm an ALSA newb and have a question regarding ALSA and how it enables more
than one process to share a mixer.

F.E. Let us say KDE/artsd has opened an ALSA mixer. Is it possible for other
applications (F.E. aplay) to also open the same ALSA mixer and have ALSA
perform the mixing between the two sources? I have tried and can not seem to
get this to work.

If this is not possible currently, what would prevent ALSA from growing to
provide this functionality? Does ALSA have plans to provide this? If my sound
card had hardware mixing, would that completely solve the problem?

It would seem that if ALSA provided the software mixing then the esd/arts
problems (hogging the single mixer) would go away and no third party
application would ever have to write specific code to handle arts/esd/JACK.
Java 1.4.2 has ALSA support and that would work too.

Comments?

Thank you.
