Thanks Julien, that was a great response. I picked up a sblive for 48 CAD and
it worked great. It even solved some of the lockup problems I was having with
my ens1371. After many hours of reading and playing around I've found:

1. The sblive (emu10k1) is the only hardware midi synthesis card you can buy
in a "normal" computer store is the sblive.
Source:http://www.linuxfocus.org/English/September2002/article259.shtml

2. Even though artsd/esd is hogging the sound/pcm/mixer? device I can still
use 'play' and 'aplay' to play wav files. With my ens1371 I could not do
this.

3. Even though artsd/esd is hogging the midi device I can still use pmidi to
play midi music.

4. I can not play oss midi while artsd/esd is running - I do not know why.

What will be really great is that Java 1.4.2 will support ALSA, and will be
able to play MIDI files even when artsd/esd is running!

Thanks again.

BTW, I was worried it wouldn't work with my VIA chipset, but it worked
perfectly and I didn't have to make any BIOS changes (defaults were fine).
Your mileage may vary as I have read about other people having troubles with
sblive and VIA chipsets.
