It's all done in software under Linux as well as Windows. In Linux you can use timidity. IIUC Creative Labs has advertised this card in a way suggesting that the sound/patch/samples have to be loaded to the card before it will work, like a card with an onboard wavetable synthesizer. However, all is done in software (the CPU does the work without help from the sound hardware).
