Here is more recent info: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/

On my Mandrake 9.0 system I have this:

[frans@dolphin frans]$ rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-headers-2.4.18-41mdk
kernel-source-2.4.19-16mdk <----- the source for the running kernel
kernel-2.4.19.16mdk-1-1mdk <----- the running kernel
[frans@dolphin frans]$

So in this RPM based distro it was just a matter of installing the
kernel-source RPM matching the running kernel.
