Frank What worked for me: get package xmms-cdread. I believe it allows xmms to treat the CD as a directory.
Why you can't play CDs in the normal way? I think it is to do with not having a cable from your CD drive to your sound card. Though I have never looked to confirm that this was my problem. Good luck.
