Hi, I just recently compiled and installed the alsa sound modules on my
machine.

It's an AMD 900, running debian stable, kernel 2.4.18. The sound card is
a Creative Sound Blaster Live! Platinum.

Currently, I am using:

alsa-driver-0.9.0rc6
alsa-lib-0.9.0rc6
alsa-utils-0.9.0rc6

alsa-driver was compiled with "--with-cards=emu10k1"

This is what I started with, as well, but when I ran across these
problems, I did downgrade once to 0.5 versions, had the same problem,
blew everything away, and reinstalled with 0.9

Anyways, what I am seeing is that the sound modules load fine, and
everything looks good, and I hear sound. However, none of the mixer
programs seem to work right. gmix doesn't do much of anything, and even
alsamixer itself behaves very strangely

At first I wasn't getting any sound, so I made sure to unmute
everything, but still nothing.. Even though "wave" and "Master" were
both up. I then started toying with the other settings. I first turned
up "Wave Central" and it raised the volume of the left channel. I then
raised "Wave LFE", which raised the right channel. Then, I realized that
the "Headphones" setting seemed to be controlling the master volume.

Pretty weird -- so, in short, alsamixer is behaving oddly, and gmix (and
other mixers) don't seem to work at all.

Any ideas?

Here are the modules loaded, and all of the pertinent devices I can
think of:
