Marie, You might look at whether your environment has possibly started some sound application that is blocking aplay. I run KDE which has a horrible tendency to start it's own sound server, to play a lot of it's own system sounds, etc. When this happens in my case, that application can sit waiting for the sound to play, and then when it does, it blocks aplay.
