I got ALSA working with my Ensoniq 1371 some time ago. Recently, i've
rebuilt my kernel and install a new video card and new drivers on my
modified RH8 system over a 2 day period. At different times as a rebuilt
the kernel, the sound system was broken and I reinstall ALSA. Once or
twice, I rebuild "ALL" drivers and did a make install which was not
necessarily what I wanted to do...regardless, I eventually got it working
again and forgot about it...although I did break 'gnome-volume-control' as
it complained about keys with bad characters in the gnome configuration
structure. Anyway, i finished the video card install and now my sound
system is broken again...I get sound but it sounds like you might hear it
underwater.

I don't know if the mixer settings are screwed up permanently, or if the
post-install and pre-remove lines in my modules.conf file are saving and
removing bad settings...I did delete the .auxmixrc file but that didn't
help. I've removed the libasound* from /usr/lib and tried removing the
modules using the troubleshooting advice in the HOW-TO but the modules were
in use...(i would have done that part again in single user mode but I didn't
think that was it...) I believe my modules are built correctly.

It sounds exactly like i'm running XMMS with one of those sound effect
plugins for voice removal since I can barely here the voice from an MP3 but
I can hear the music just fine. Although i've checked and none of the
plugins are enabled. Even when i'm not running XMMS playing an MP3, the
same problem occurs with a CD in the CD drive being played with cdplayer.

Please any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!
