I have been having much trouble getting ALSA to work lately. I've been
trying to compile 0.9.0rc6 (and have also tried rc5) on Linux 2.4.20
with sbawe. It compiles fine (with debug enabled), and seems to load
fine, but when I try to look at any files in /proc/asound I get (for
example):

cat: /proc/asound/version: No such device

The last time I tried to play an audio file (with aplay) in this state,
my computer froze and I had to use SysRq to reboot... Also alsamixer
segfaults when I try to change anything.
When I try modprobe snd-sbawe, here's what I get:

ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/isa/sb/sb16.c:313: isapnp SB16: port=0x220, mpu port=0x330, fm
port=0x388
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/isa/sb/sb16.c:315: isapnp SB16: dma1=1, dma2=5, irq=7
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/isa/sb/sb16.c:334: isapnp SB16: wavetable port=0x620
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/isa/sb/sb_common.c:131: SB [0x220]: DSP chip found, version =
4.16
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/isa/sb/emu8000.c:178: EMU8000 [0x620]: Synth chip found
ALSA ../../alsa-kernel/isa/sb/emu8000.c:451: EMU8000 [0x620]: 4096 Kb on-board memory
detected

It looks just fine... I've never had trouble with ALSA in the past, so
any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm not using devfs, and the
/dev/snd symlink is in place. I'm not sure where to from here.

Thanks...
