A couple of possibilities:

Do you already have the OSS sound driver loaded?  (If so, you need to
unload it first)
Do you have "plug and play OS" turned *off* in your BIOS setup?  (It
should be off)

Could you please post the output of "lsmod" and "dmesg" so we can try
and see what's going on exactly?
