That would be nice. Now that alsa is in the official linux kernel one can
just assume that more and more programs are going to work directly with
the alsa api. If I understand you correctly it is possible to get software
mixing in there in some sort of a middle layer (not in each driver) and it
would still work with all the normal applications without the need to
change them?

That is good news!

Unless I missunderstood of course. I'm the first to admit that I don't 
know much about alsa yet.

ps. Since it worked so nice when I change to alsa on my old computer I'm
now in the process to change to alsa also on my main computer. I'm one
happy user!
