On Red Hat, at least, you can put:

post-install snd-cs46xx /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
pre-remove   snd-cs46xx /usr/sbin/alsactl store

in /etc/modules.conf and the alsactl commands will be run automatically
for you any time the soundcard module is loaded or unloaded.  Replase
'snd-cs46xx' with whatever module you are using, of course.
