Thanks, all, for the help. Seems that I've been looking in the wrong place for the problem.
I reinstalled a few times and verified that I had the proper things in /dev. Then decided to try some alternate recorders. Both snd and audacity work flawlessly (well, as much as I can tell in a 10 minute test period).
But, arecord is a complete bust. Is this a known problem? I've recompiled to make sure, and problems persist. Some sample calls and problems:
bob$ arecord foo.wav
Recording WAVE 'foo.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
I interupt this with ctrl-c. I get a file, but it is mostly static.
bob$ arecord -f cd foo.wav
Recording WAVE 'foo.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
Again, interupt with ctrl-c. I get a 44 byte file, no sound. Interesting , when I play it it with aplay I have to ctrl-c to stop aplay, but no sound.
bob$ arecord -f dat foo.wav
Recording WAVE 'foo.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Stereo
Now, this works. Recording sounds okay.
Is there an updated aplay/arecord I should be looking at?
