I had troubles with my ice1712 sound card and rtl8139 network card. I compiled it as modules. Modprobe was ok but devices did not work. I tried 2.4.18 and 19. After searching in internet I found that in November 2002 there are discussed the same problem about 8139 netcard in kernel-list. >From this discussion I have undestood that removing "local support APIC on uniprocessors" from kernel can help and it help. After removing I have no problems with my sound and network cards.
