Last thing before I go to bed .. (3am here but I've been doing some
testing... results later) 

I would highly recommend M-Audio products both for their quality and
support on this OS. I use a Delta 66 (PCI based though) 

I would like to add, on other platforms USB 1.1 has not been popular
with audio magazine reviewers.. (read Audio Technology (Australia) and
Sound On Sound (UK)) due to low bandwidth and bandwidth sharing issues. 

I would hope the results under Linux are better.. but now would be a
good time for someone who actually uses a USB audio device under Linux
to speak up.
