well, i forgot to ask which driver and chip version. via82xx behaves differently depending on the chip version. i guess you are using via8233 (not via8233A) or via8235. if yes, /dev/adsp will work as you wish, but then you'll lose the capability for multi-playback. with /dev/dsp, you can play up to 4 streams at the same time.
