Thanks for the suggestions. I chose to fall back to version rc6 (lib, utils, and driver).
I'm closer to getting things going - but not quite there.
If I use the alsa-driver-*/utils/insert script I can get sound.
However, if I add the entries in the /etc/modules.conf I get the dreaded pcm read/write error.
(One additional quirk is that some .wav files play while others do not. The ones that play
are "signed integer" and the ones that do not are "unsigned integer" format.)
I noticed in the "insert" script they are doing the following in addition to "modprobe":
insmod -m snd-ac97-codec.o
insmod -m snd-mpu401-uart.o
insmod snd-via82xx.o mpu_port0x330
What is being accomplished here to get things to work that is different than
using in /etc/modules.conf? (FYI, I've used both the alsa-driver/utils/alsaconfig
script and hand edited entries taken from the website - neither seem to load the
modules properly at boot time.)
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help.

I have a similar configuration and experienced the same problems when I tried to upgrade from alsa 0.9.0rc6 to 0.9.0rc7. The rc6 versions were working fine, so I just reinstalled them and my system has been working fine. Actually, I have the rc6 versions of the driver and kernel packages installed and rc7 versions of the lib, and utils. I would recommend that you try installing the rc6 version of the driver and kernel packages. Of course, if you have time, it would be helpful if you could try to figure why rc7 is broken. On 2003.02.19 05:45 Chip McFalls wrote:Hi,
I have a VIA 8233A AC97 sound device in an MSI with an Athlon board/cpu.
I'm running Red Hat kernel 2.4.18-14.
I downloaded the alsa :
driver 0.9.0rc7
lib 0.9.0rc7
utils 0.9.0rc7
oss-0.9.0rc1 (not needed?)
I compiled and loaded the via82xx module, etc according to:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=VIA&card=&chip=via8233a&module=via82xx
My cd player is now working. However, attempting to play a wave file results in
the system locking and becoming very slow to respond, if at all.
I made several unsuccessful build attempts - so I was thinking maybe I just need to
start over with a clean attempt.
I've also had some difficulty with modprobe finding my new modules.
Any suggestions?
Thanks - Chip
