I had something similar happen with my pc - it has 2 sound cards in it 
like yours. Check out /proc/asound/cards - you'll probably see the onboard 
sound card as card 0 and the quattro as card 1.

If you see the setup above, load the modules for the onboard sound card 
*after* those for the quattro, the numbers are allocated on-the-fly and I 
think XMMS may be using card 0. 

If you do *not* see the quattro in the cards file then, well, that's 
another story. A laptop can be a very difficult place to learn Linux. 
Before attempting to get the Quattro working I'd be sure some other USB 
device (e.g. a  USB mouse) works correctly, which is a story for another 
newsgroup :). I'm not sure how or if the kernel USB support is linked to 
the ALSA ez-usb stuff, but I'd guess that they are.
