hmm, in the original question, do you mean that the other apps don't
work on digital or analog outputs?  it's not clear from the
context...

basically the analog output should work, but there might be a bug for
programs like quake3 or tuxracer, which use OSS mmap mode.

if the analog output works and the digital not, then it's likely a
configuration problem.  IEC958 status bits doen't match with the
current sample rate, or so.  it's not easy if you don't know the
meaning of bits.

doesn't PCM volume affect?

ehm, which program and how did you run/configure it?
via analog or digital-ac3?
