actually, there -is- another issue with your chipset, it is something about DMA buffers. would you mind checking dmsg if something like "Corrupted DMA bridge workaround activated" shows up?
i have VIA KT133a and this particular flaw should not be there, but there probably is something similar... don't know yet.
and one more thing about your SB16 ... is it ISA PnP or plain ISA?

My graphic card stays on and I just have an image of whatever I was doing last, my mouse does not move nor can I get to any virtual terminals. I know it's a locked good since when I unplug my serial port monitoring my UPS, it won't shutdown like it should (which works when X crashes and my display is corrupted). The only way to restart is with the reset button.
The alsa that was originally installed with SuSE 8.0 (not sure on the version, a CVS version I think, for sure before rc6) caused the same problem. Took me a long time to trace it to my SB16 since I wasn't playing back music on my computer because my speakers sucked. Would just randomly lock up, sometimes after 10 days or so, but eventually. One day I noticed that arts was pegging the CPU usage, and I disabled it. No more lock-ups. So I tried playing back music on it and determined it was alsa, not arts that was actually causing the lock-ups. So I started with the RC6 release and then RC7 when it came out.
My machine is based on the VIA MVP3, perhaps it has a problem. I know the UDMA implementation on it is flawed but I have a PCI IDE adapter now. Maybe it has other issues as well. Of course if you don't have the same chipset, that probably rules it out.

Seems that we have the same problem. What kind of lock-up do you experience? Does your graphic card stay on-line?
And did it ever work without the OSS ?

Using the Alsa drivers with my SB16 ISA locks the machine when using the alsa dsp. If I use oss-emulation, it will not lock up, but the sound quality is very poor. I recompiled my kernel with OSS support and I can play back ogg-vorbis files all day long without any lock-ups (and the sound quality is just as good as the alsa dsp). I'm running kernel 2.4.18 on SuSE 8.0. Unfortunately I don't get any error messages in my log, the machine apparently hangs before anything can be written. I can lock it up by launching XMMS playing through the alsa dsp plugin and then launch Mozilla and try to save something to disk. As soon as the save/open dialog pops up, the machine hangs. Mozilla of course is not the only thing that will lock it up when running playing music, but it certainly is the most repeatable.

Thanks for any help!
