first, please specify which chip model.  apple's machines have
several different chip models, and they behave differently, although
there is only a single module for them.

regarding jack: i guess your chip (ibook?) doesn't support the
capture.  run jackd with -P driver option, i.e.

        % jackd -d alsa -P
