it depends on the card you're using.
my maestro 3 onboard and sblive sound seems to support multiple opens on 
/dev/dsp without running a sound daemon.
However, an Intel 810 won't do it.
SB told me that your driver must support hardware mixing, however, I don't 
know how to get those information rather to trying it for myself...
