Hi,

I'm using Debian woody. I didn't have any notable problems with getting
ALSA installed, apart from some minor annoyance caused by debconf and the
configure script using both via868 and via868a and not recognizing they
are the same, but I have loads of trouble with devices.

For instance gnome2.2 complains about not being able to use
/dev/sound/mixer right after you log in, and xmms won't play any media
with it's default Output Plugin, OSS Driver 1.2.7 [libOSS.so]. I tried
using alternate devices, but to no avail. Also gnome-volume-control center
complains about /dev/mixer.

This is what my /etc/alsa/modutils/0.9 looks like:

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 via686

# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

In INSTALL there is a section on mapping ALSA PCM to OSS, but I don't know
how to put that to work. Adding aliasses of that sort don't seem to help:

alias /dev/sound/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Regards,

Arjen
