When you use "hw:xxx" to directly access the hardware driver, you must use a sample rate and sample format supported by the hardware. The only sample format supported by ice1712 chips is something like 8 channels with 24 bits. Either use "plughw:xxx" to automatically convert the sample format, or use some .asoundrc magic to access a subset of the available channels (see http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php3?company=Midiman&card=Delta+44&chip=Envy24&module=ice1712 for details).
