yes I'm sure the application is the only one to access the device.

what's happening with most applications except xmms and mplayer (that only 
works with oss emulation), is :
- no sound at all, application seems to lock : arts, mpg123, ogg123, xine...
- or each chunk of sound (let's say 1/2 second) plays something like 10 times 
: some kde applications like kget, sometimes even xmms (when changing song)

I will try to revert to alsa 0.9rc6 like someone said here, but I've already 
tried a bunch of versions (I've currently reverted to 0.9rc2 that worked with 
the same hardware under mandrake 8.2, but under my current mdk 9.1 doesn't 
well)
