Narrative-------------- I've spent quite some time configuring everything on this computer to run with Linux. Just about everything is working except for the sound. Now, one year back, I compiled and ran Alsa's drivers without any problem. I don't know what version that was however. Now, it's June 14, 2003. I've since zeroed out the hard drive and put a clean install Of Linux on the laptop. Everything seems to work, except for the sound. I compile Alsa Driver 0.9.2 for the ES1688 series soundcard. Alsa says it works (http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/) but when it comes time to run the driver, it fails. Problem---------------- ESS1688 Driver Initialization Fails on Linux with the Alsa Drivers 0.9.2. Error Messages: /lib/modules/2.4.21/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg /lib/modules/2.4.21/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.21/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688.o: insmod snd-es1688 failed Once again, everything worked with an older version of Alsa, but refuses to work with 0.9.2. Does anyone out there know how to fix this problem? Did something happen to Alsa that fundamentally changed the way it accesses the hardware? Any help would be appreciated.
