Does this .wav file have 6 channels? I don't think "aplay" can decode Dolby Digital or DTS, for instance. I successfully played an avi file with mplayer that had 5.1 Dolby Digital in it using -ac hwac3, but via the digital output of my ICH4. I have never tried it with the analog outputs.
