I have ALSA 0.9.2 on a conexant CX20468 (via8233). I'm trying to route the CD
output to a minidisc recorder via the SPDIF optical output: sync is ok, but no
signal comes out. Only PCM streams (e.g., from wav/mp3 files) are correctly
routed *whatever* mixer setting is adopted (with IEC958 playback/output always
on). Am I missing something?

AFAICS your hardware isn't able to do what you want. The SPDIF output can only play digital data; if you want to output data from the analog CD input, you have to record it first and then play it like a .wav file.

xmms has a plugin that reads the digital data directly off the disk instead of using the internal analog cable. Would that work? It's called xmms-cdread.

Also, I have to admit I am somewhat confused by Clemens' answer. Clemens, why would the source of the data make a difference? Looking at the schematic for the VIA 8325's audio chip, the ALC650, I get the impression that the data can come from any source and then is routed to any output... but looking even more closely, I see that the SPDIF outputs aren't on the diagram.
