Thanks for that. I have recompile the kernel with your suggestions. I now get past the make modules section without error.
Don't know if this is important since Alsa is not yet installed but there is an "unresolved symbol" message when the kernel boots this time the missing symbol is /lib/modules/.../sound/acore/snd.o As before a check of the above directory shows that the file does actually exists? Also I have compiled the Alsa drivers, libs and utilities without problem but am having problems with modprobe. The command '/sbin/modprobe snd-card-audiopci' returns an error stating the module can not be located.
